INSTITUTE OF AFRICAN AND DIASPORA STUDIES (IADS) ORGANISES THE BLACK HISTORY MONTH FOR 2019

The Institute of African and Diaspora Studies (IADS) commenced the 2019 Black History Month on February 26, to Thursday, March7, 2019. The programme which featured many activities included film show, African Music and Dance, Art Exhibitions, panel discussions, secondary School Debate Competition and Roundtable discussion were organized at the IADS Gallery, Faculty of Arts J.P. Clark Centre, University of Lagos.

The keynote address was given by Russell Brooks, Public Affairs Officer, United States Consulate General Lagos.

 

The following topics were considered at the event:

  • Why we must Continue to Highlight Black Excellence (From 1619 to 2019)
  • “12 Years of Slave”
  • Black African Origins and Contributions to Christianity, Islam and Other World Religions
  • “Black Feminism: Real or Imagined”
  • Can Racism ever be eliminated?
  • The Freedom Ridders
  • Governance Issues
  • Poverty
  • Migration
  • Population Explosion and Religious Intolerance and;
  • Racism in the Sun

The event was declared opened by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Development Services), Professor Folasade T. Ogunsola who represented the Vice Chancellor, Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, FAS.

CONFUCIUS INSTITUTE ORGANISES SPRING FESTIVAL 2019

Confucius Institute held its Spring Festival 2019 at the J. F. Ade Ajayi (Main Auditorium) on Tuesday, February 26, 2019. Spring Festival is the Chinese New Year known as Chun Jie, the most important festival in China. The festival involves families getting together and having big traditional meal. Many primary and secondary schools like University of Lagos Staff School, International School, Jextoban, Yabatech Secondary School and also Nigerian Navy Centre of Education and Training Technology participated at the programmes. The programme evolved dance, Chinese songs, knowledge quiz, talk show and musical fashion.The Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic & Research), Professor Oluwole Familoni and the Registrar& Secretary to Council were in attendance.

 

Representatives from China Embassy were also present and added colour to the event. The event was attended by the staff of the University. The Confucius Institute’s team headed by Professor Chimdi Maduagwu was full of appreciation to the University management and all in attendance.The Office of Advancement was well represented

PROFESSOR OYIBO DELIVERS 7TH INAUGURAL LECTURE, JUNE 7

Professor Wellington Aghoghovwia Oyibo of the Dept. of Medical Microbilogy & Parasitology, Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences will deliver the Seventh (7th) Inaugural Lecture in the 2016/2017 Academic Session of the University of Lagos on Wednesday, June 7, 2017 at 4pm at the J.F Ade Ajayi Auditorium, UNILAG, Akoka.
 
The Vice Chancellor, Professor Rahamon A. Bello, FAEng will preside over the lecture entitled: Parasitus Facultas et Humanum Intelligentia: The Footprints of a Medical Parasitologist in the Neglected Tropical Parasitic Diseases and Malaria Landscape.
 
Members of the University Community, Alumni & the general public are cordially invited.

 

UNILAG UNVEILS FIRST INSTITUTIONAL TELEVISION

 
 

History was made at University of Lagos on Tuesday, January 15, 2019 with the official launching of the first campus television in Nigeria. The Television Channel 184 (Star Times) and the TV logo was unveiled by the management of the University led by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, FAS. In his remarks, the Chairman Unilag Multi – Media Ventures Board’s; Professor O. A. Falaiye asserted that the television station will be run professionally. According to him, Unilag Television station has 60% local content and it is poised to challenge the existing media. 

The Vice Chancellor, Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe was grateful to the President Muhammadu Buhari GCFR led Government for approving the television station as the first/pioneer station in West Africa. In his words, the Vice Chancellor stressed that the University will ensure that the activities of Creative Arts and Computer Engineering would be merged to come up with profitable package. Answering questions from other media organisations, the Vice Chancellor reiterated that the station will be free of any interference and control from the University Management. Also, there would be interplay between Entertainment and Research. The Vice Chancellor equally urged the management of the Venture to to have a wider vision and should not limit itself to Unilag only. Professor Ogundipe stressed that students would be involved at the project as laboratory as it is the desire of the University to ignite the potentials from the students. It was confirmed that the Ventures has gotten some equipment from Step B (World Bank). The Television station was later launched and the logo was unveiled at the instance of Principal Officers, Professor Ralph Akinfeleye, Council members and other members of teaching and non- teaching staff. The Office of Advancement was well represented at the ceremony.
